What Separates Me and You

Chapter 483 Madman

The bodyguards that Conrad brought along all turned their backs to Lewis. They would rather not witness his drunken behavior to avoid getting into trouble for it.

Conrad plucked up his courage and unlocked the right car with the remote car key. He cautiously pointed at the Bentley on the other side. "Mr. Alvarez, i-it's that car."

Lewis gave him a side glance, and he immediately cowered.

Dragging Josephine along, Lewis staggered to the Bentley and shoved her into it.

"Josie, sit tight." He even bent over to help her buckle the seat belt. However, she felt a bit suffocated by his heavy weight on her body.

He also reeked of alcohol. Josephine turned her face away to keep a distance between them.

After buckling her seat belt, he left the passenger seat and stumbled his way to the driver's seat.

Seeing that, Conrad dared not hold him back. The best he could do was to ask the others to tail Lewis' car. He hoped nothing bad would happen from Lewis' drunk driving.

Clutching her seatbelt, Josephine stared at Lewis nervously. She noticed that he was struggling to ignite the engine.

"Lewis, why would you drive when you're drunk? Do you want us both dead?"

He didn't seem to hear her words. He was still fumbling for the push button. Conrad couldn't hold back anymore. He pointed to Lewis' right.

"Mr. Alvarez, it's there in the lower right corner of the gear lock."

Lewis finally found the button and started the engine.

Josephine closed her eyes and sighed helplessly. When Lewis was making a turn, he accidentally broke the side mirror of another car.

Conrad rested a hand on his forehead. He was worried but dared not stop Lewis. Lewis was scary enough when he was sober. No one in their right mind would get into trouble with a drunk Lewis.

Instead, he asked some men to follow Lewis' car. The Bentley in front of them sped in a zig-zag manner. Conrad's heart leaped to his throat upon seeing that.

Josephine clutched on tightly to her seatbelt. However, she didn't say a word to avoid distracting the already drunk driver.

She turned to look at him. It was dim in the car, and she could only make out his side profile. She then let go of her grip on the seatbelt and enjoyed the breeze.

Although Lewis was drunk driving, she didn't fear the trip because she wasn't afraid of death.

Eyes closed, she thought it'd at least be a painless and immediate death if they got into a car crash, given the speed at which Lewis was driving. Still, there weren't a lot of cars on the road at that hour. She waited, but death did not knock on her door.

The car rolled to a stop. She opened her eyes but could not see anything in the darkness out there. However, she heard the sound of water. Lewis had gotten out of the car. He came to her side and opened the car door for her. Then, he extended his hand.

She looked at him but did not hold his hand when she got out of the car. Still, he held her hand and led her forward.

They were on a grassy field. The ground felt soft and loose with each step they took. Sea breezes that smelled briny caressed their faces.

She tried to figure out where they were at. When she looked up, she saw the shimmer of the waves on the surface of the sea. There was a faint sight of a moon at dawn on the sea.

The moonlight scattered across the surface of the sea. When the wind blew, the ripples would spread the silvery light around. As a result, it gave off the illusion of a layer of white chiffon on the sea.

She stared shockingly at the sea. She had never discovered such a place in Elysium.

The scenery reminded her of lines from a certain poem.

"'Twas noontide of summer,

And mid-time of night;

And stars, in their orbits,

Shone pale, thro' the light

Of the brighter, cold moon ..."

"Isn't it beautiful?" Lewis suddenly mumbled.

She turned to him. He sounded more like himself, so he must have sobered up.

"Why did you bring me here?"

He turned around and walked up to her. His face was illuminated by the headlights of the car not far away. She could see his face clearly.

"I don't know either." He stared at her. The breeze swept past the hem of his shirt and his baby hair. His short hair stuck to his forehead messily. He looked a little disheveled, but that made him appear boyish.noveldrama

"I heard the sunrise is lovely around here."

She was taken aback by his remark.

"I was thinking that we should make some beautiful memories during this lifetime. How painful would it be when you're on your deathbed but can't think of one good memory from the past?"

She stared keenly at him. She could not tell if he was sober or drunk.

After a long silence, she finally replied, "If that were to happen, death would be a relief rather than a suffering."

"But I heard that people always think of good memories when they die."

"Who told you that? The dead?"

Lewis chuckled at her words and suddenly extended his hand to her. Surprised, she stared at him in confusion.

He gave her a tiny nod and a look of encouragement. Although she was clueless about his intentions, she placed her hand in his palm. Next, he grasped her hand and took a step backward.

"You'll know after you try it."

Her eyes wavered. In no time, she felt gravity pulling on her as she fell through the air. That was how she fell off a cliff because of Lewis. "Madman!" That was the only thought in her blank mind. How could he bring her to the seaside to commit suicide?

The rustling breeze hurt her cheeks. The view around her spun at a dizzying speed as she fell.

This would be her third time falling off a cliff. She was no stranger to the sensation.

This time, she did not have any thoughts in her mind at all.

Right before they fell into the sea, Lewis hugged her on the waist. Then, they dived into the water at the same time.

They plunged right into the chillingly cold seawater that seeped into her mouth and nose. When the salty water reached her lungs, she felt a scorching pain in her chest. Her brain felt like exploding from the lack of oxygen.

As a reflex, she started struggling in the water. The more she struggled, the more she drowned-all because of his arms around her waist.

She did not know how to swim or hold her breath. The first ten seconds of drowning were the worst for her. She inhaled and exhaled water. The huge influx of water into her lungs made her cough. The more she coughed, the worst she felt.

After struggling for a while, she finally quietened. She felt no pain, and she entered a weirdly serene state. She could even open her eyes to view the beautiful scenes under the sea.

She saw the moonlight that streamed into the sea. Colorful fishes were swimming around her. She also noticed how blue the water was.

She seemed to be one with the sea. Like a fish, she felt light. She couldn't tell if she was sinking or floating.

Her past flashed across her eyes, including that of her parents' smile from her childhood. She saw them waving at her, and she walked toward them. Holding her mom's hand, she had finally reunited with her family.

This time, she smiled happily when she succeeded in holding her mom's hand.

She wondered if her mom had forgiven her. Lewis was right-only good memories flashed across one's mind before death.
