Deepest Repentance 4
The staff member stared at him with a suspicious look, as if trying to determine whether he was planning to skip out on the bill.
"Don't look at me like that! I have money, I'm the president of a company, I have a lot of money!"
Ryan shouted, his voice filled with indignation, as though he had just been gravely insulted.
He began frantically dialing my number.
Sitting inside my car, I glanced at the screen lighting up with his repeated calls and set my phone aside.
Wasn't he the one who refused to answer my calls earlier?
Now it's my turn to ignore him.
Linda looked mortified.
She hadn't expected Ryan to come to the maternity photoshoot without any money.
She hadn't planned to spend her own either, so she hadn't brought anything.
In the end, the infuriated staff deleted all of their maternity photos in front of the pair.
Later that evening, Ryan called me again.
His voice carried no guilt.
Instead, it was masked with a carefully measured tone of weariness, mixed with a hefty dose of anger.
"I told you! There's a tricky project at work right now, and the whole company's working overtime. What's wrong with you?
Giving me a frozen card and ruining my plans! Can you afford to compensate for this mess?"
I lowered my gaze, suppressing the ache in my heart.
I had already expected this response, yet it still stung.
From the other end of the line, I heard Linda's voice in the background.
"Honey, the baby's kicking again! Come feel it!"
Ryan immediately lowered his voice, as if moving to another room.
He steadied his tone and began, "Sweetheart, I..."
I cut him off before he could continue, feigning ignorance of what I had just overheard.
"What could you possibly be so busy with?"
"Huh?" Ryan froze, stunned by the unusual sharpness in my tone.
"Your job. Most of the work you claim to be doing is actually handled by me at home. The funds you brag about? They come from the connections of my family. If you're still overwhelmed despite all of this, it only proves you're incompetent." "And don't forget. Tomorrow, we're going to the Civil Affairs Bureau to finalize our divorce."
Without waiting for his response, I hung up decisively.
He had always complained about me being too clingy.
Surely he'd be satisfied with this version of me now.
The next morning, the doorbell rang.
I opened the door to find a deliveryman with a bouquet of roses.
"These are from a Mr. Ryan." the deliveryman began.
Before he could finish, I tossed the flowers into the trash without hesitation.
I had made up my mind to let go of everything tied to him.
No matter what it was, I didn't want it anymore.
I left for the Civil Affairs Bureau.
Heavy rain poured down, but it couldn't dampen my determination.
By the time I arrived with the signed divorce papers, I was surprised to see that it wasn't Ryan waiting at the entrance but Linda.
She greeted me with a bright, smug smile, waving a photo in her hand.
"Hey, look at this! Who knew you, the 'perfect wife,' could be caught sneaking around with another man?"
The photo showed Ethan and me in an embrace.
He was gently stroking my hair, comforting me.
I stayed calm and asked, "What do you want?"
"I heard you're divorcing Ryan. Looks like you're not completely hopeless after all," she said, tilting her chin up with pride.
"Your husband is mine now, and my child will inherit his fortune. I won't let you take a single penny. If you don't walk away empty-handed, I'll make these photos public."
I laughed coldly. "Oh, really? Are you sure he actually has money for you and your child to inherit?"
Her smug expression faltered. "What do you mean by that?"
Thunder cracked across the sky as the rain intensified, flooding the streets.
I smirked. "Everything Ryan has is thanks to me and my family.
Without us, he'd have nothing. The moment we divorce, I guarantee he'll be broke in less than three months."
Her confidence wavered, and she asked hesitantly, "You're bluffing, right?"
I was done wasting words with her.
Turning to leave, I headed toward my car, intending to return home safely before the rain got worse.
But before I could step away, Linda grabbed my wrist tightly.
"Explain yourself! You're not leaving until you do!"
Her nails dug into my skin painfully.
Pregnant and heavily burdened, I could only protect my stomach with one hand, ensuring my child remained unharmed.
The rainwater had risen to our calves, making it harder to move.
Then, a loud voice interrupted us.
"What are you two doing?!"
Ryan appeared, and Linda's demeanor instantly changed.
She clung to her belly, feigning innocence and sorrow.
"Sophia, I never wanted to fight with you for Ryan. Please don't hurt me. Can I just 'borrow' him for a while? I'll give him back after I've had the baby, okay?"
Ryan, hearing this, turned furious. He stormed over, glaring at me.
"Sophia, why must you push Linda to the brink? Get lost! I'm taking her away!"
He shoved me aside roughly, snatched my car keys, and helped Linda into my car.
From the window, he looked at me coldly.
"You should repent for your actions. If anything happens to Linda or her baby, I'll make you pay."
With that, he drove off, leaving me stranded in the pouring rain, the car my only chance of escape from the rising floodwaters.noveldrama
Alone, burdened by my heavy belly, I struggled to walk through the storm.
Tears mixed with rain as despair overwhelmed me.
Finally, I collapsed under the onslaught of the flood.
"Look! There's a pregnant woman over there!"
Voices from the rescue team echoed in my fading consciousness.
"Get a doctor! Notify her family!"
Pain and exhaustion dragged me into darkness.
The next thing I remembered was being rushed into surgery, doctors scrambling to deliver my child.
"The patient is in critical condition," one of them said urgently.
"There's a risk of massive bleeding. Where is her husband? We need his consent for the operation!"
What do you think?
